Welcome to another post on Human Communication ╰(✿´⌣`✿)╯
For today post, I'm gonna discuss about
Verbal Message
What is Verbal msgs? ( ̄(エ) ̄)ゞ
What is Verbal itself?
from the previous post(Chapter 1 - Component of Human communication.)
Message (slang: msgs) is
a communication containing some information, news, advice, request, or the like, sent by messenger, telephone, email, or other means.
The opposite of verbal is
"non-verbal"
where it meant using physical way
to gives meaning to your msgs, such as body language, emotion, gesture, etc.
By using the right words,
we are able to express ourself to anyone freely,
able to convey our ideal to anyone,
avoid disagreement and misunderstanding.
How we are able to evolve our society and cultural.
Key topic of today's post are..
- Principles of verbal messages
- Disconfirmation and confirmation
- Using verbal messages effectively
*✲゚*。✧Principle of Verbal Messages✧。*✲゚*
Even in Verbal Mesage, there's a principle to know to engage an effective comunication. The priciple of Verbal msgs are..
✧Message Meanings Are in People
✧Messages Are Denotative and Connotative
✧Meanings Depend on Context/ Abstraction
✧Messages Vary in Politeness
✧Messages Vary in Assertiveness
✧Messages Can Deceive
✧Message Meanings Are in People✧
Everyone has their perception of things,
and it's great, but it also apply during communication.
Different people may say different things,
but mean the same thing.
Different people may say the same things
but different meaning.
Human are one confusing creature,
but smart ٩(・ิᴗ・ิ๑)۶
or insane.
but yeah.. you know what i meant :V
We, as Human, must understand the meaning behind the messages
as it might give us a different meaning even though it might sound or look the same
this is called miscommunication(bypassing another meaning)
Examples,
Scenario 1
“I hate Sushi Kings, Sushi look disgusting
same meaning, different words.
Scenario 2
“I hate vegetable” & “I love carrot”
same thing, but different meaning.
✧Messages Are Denotative and Connotative✧
Denotative : word's objective definition; dictionary meaning
Connotative : word's subjective; emotional meaning
Denotative:
Red – is of a color at the end of the spectrum next to orange and opposite violet, such as blood, rubies. (Oxford Dictionary)
Connotative:
Red – bravery, China’s flag, fire, etc.
"why connotative is need if it just messed up the direct meaning of the word?"
Because of the literal and hidden meaning of words,
some use it for their own advantage.
the types of connotative messages :
Snarl words : to speak or commute in a negative way (“idiot” “loser”)
Purr words : to speak in a loving or positive way (“dream,” “sweetheart”)
✧Meanings Depend on Context/ Abstraction✧
How a msgs may differ due to situation or places
Examples:
Crush: “How are you?”
Me: *internal thinking "Do you mean “hello”???
Or do you mean “or do you mean am i feeling well????"*
Crush: Ok .... Sorry for your loss.
Me: *WHY DID I SAY THAT???? WHO ON EARTH SAY THAT????*
There are other influence that affect the messages.
there are:
#Cultural Influence
the four principle of cultural influence
> Principle of Cooperation
in communication, people are engaged in a cooperative effort to help each other understand each other.
The Principle of Cooperation includes four maxims(principle or rule of conduct):
- the maxim of quality: be truthful, do not lie
- the maxim of relation: talk about what is relevant to the conversation
- the maxim of manner: be clear, brief, and organized
- the maxim of quantity: be informative
>Principle of Peaceful Relations
keeping peace in a relationship takes precedence over expressing disagreement
>Principle of Face-Saving
never embarrass anyone, especially in public
>Principle of Self-Denigration
avoid taking credit for accomplishments to yourself, at the same time raise the image of other people
Gender too has it play in verbal msgs,
since both men and women psychologically different.
Examples
Men - direct, assertive, brief
Women - emotional, complicated, polite.
✧Messages Vary in Politeness✧
Politeness is universal across all cultures;
however, differences exist concerning how politeness is defined, expressed, and honored
Men and women may differ in their use of polite verbal messages by tone, languages, etc.
Politeness may vary based on type of relationship - friends, lover, family.
Politeness may depend on the directness of the msgs as
Directness usually less polite (impolite)
While Indirectness allow people to express a desire without insulting or offending anyone or to ask for compliments in a socially acceptable manner;
however, indirect messages can be overly ambiguous and easily misunderstood
For example:
-“ it's has be great to see you” (Direct)
-“ this is a lovely dinner, we have to do this again” (Indirect)
✧Messages Vary in Assertiveness ✧
Definition: the willingness to asserts one's rights; speak their minds and welcome others doing likewise.
Although it was encourage to have assertiveness during communication,
but over-assertiveness is not favorable at times.
Communicating assertiveness
1.Describe the problem
2.State how this problem affect you
3.Propose solutions
4.Confirm understanding
✧Messages Can Deceive✧
Also meant LYINGLying meant as the acts of sending msgs with the intention of giving false information/untrue information.
The types of lies are:
1)Pro-Social Deception ♬ To Achieve Some Good
2)Self-Enhancement Deception ♬ To make yourself Look Good
3)Selfish Deception ♬ To Protect Yourself
4) Anti-Social Deception ♬ To Harm Someone
2)Self-Enhancement Deception ♬ To make yourself Look Good
3)Selfish Deception ♬ To Protect Yourself
4) Anti-Social Deception ♬ To Harm Someone
Disconfirmation and confirmation
Confirmation: Allowing the message to be passed through while acknowledging the message and the sender.
Although disconfirmation is consider an impolite,
there are time where disconfirmation is understandable.
Examples, Ignoring someone who teases you.
There are an areas affected by disconfirmation and confirmation: a. Racism - anything that make race looks inferior to another race.
b. Sexism - to practice or support favoritism that criticizes or having a bias towards a specific gender.
c. Heterosexism - attitudes, behaviors and language used to disparage gays and lesbians, language that presumes all people are heterosexual
d. Ageism - discrimination based on age; usually signifies discrimination against the old and against aging.
although we may look different, but we are still human.
Together we stand, divided chaos rules
or something :V
